1.Family is the most important relationship in peoples lives.
Lena Younger Mama: She is the head of the household and the most nurturing out of the Younger family. She watches over her family and takes care of them. Her children are her life and even her own dream of purchasing a new home is to give her children a better living condition. The whole family seems to lean on her. She shows that family is the most important relationship in peoples lives.

2.Dreams are necessary to people as food and shelter.
Walter Lee Younger: He is very ambitious in trying to pursue his dream of owning liquor store that he believes will solve all his financial problems. His obsession with this dream is what keeps him going throughout the play. Even after Willy ran off with the money he still wants to hold onto the possibility that his dream of opening a liquor store will come true. This dream is important to him as food and shelter because he believes this is the answer to all his problems.

3.It is better to fight with dignity than surrender in shame.
Beneatha Bennie Younger: Bennie is a new woman who does not conform to the traditional female role. Her dream of becoming a female doctor not a nurse or a housewife like Walter suggests shows that she likes to be independent and not fall into traditional roles. She also despises that the African American community is being forced to give up their culture to fit in with the white community. She fights these roles with dignity rather than surrendering to the behavior most people would expect.
