In the english literature we can find the theme of reality and appearance in the work of Oscar Wilde The picture of Dorian Gray.

Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854 and he was educated at Trinity College and Oxford where he distinguished himself for his eccentricity. He public Poems than give him success and made him famous for his irony and poses. In 1883 he marreid a woman who give him 2 children but soon he was tired of his marriage. He wrote a series of short stories for his children and a Novel “The picture of Dorian Gray”. After he was interested in drama and comedy of manners. The plays and the novel damaged his reputation and were considere obscene and immoral. In 1891 he met a young boy with whom he started a homosexual relationship. The father of this young boy denounced him and Wilde was sent in prison where he wrote “De Profundis”. When he came out of prison he was a broken man his wife refused to see him and he want into exile in France where he died in poverty.
Wilde adopted the Aestetic ideal and was interested in beautiful chlotes and delicious food. In his opinion the art was a cult of beauty so he was interested also in beauty and pleasure. He used his wit to shock and lived in freedom so he lived the double role of dandy and rebel.

“The picture of Dorian Gray” is the story about a young and beautiful boy Dorina. Hallward a painter was fashinated by Dorian and decided to paint him. In his studio Dorian met Lord Wotton who influenced him and Dorian started to thind about beauty like a precious gift. He wished that the portrait of himself would grow old in his place and this happen.
After a story with an actress Sibyl Vane ended with the suicide of Sibyl Dorian discovered that the portrait became ugly of his guilt-feelings and hide the picture in the garret. He lived a life of pleasure and luxury and sometimes go to control his picture. One day tormented to his guilt-felling destroy with a knife the picture (the same knife with he killed Hallward). The next day his servant find his body aged and with a knife knock in his heart near the picture intact.

This novel was written in the third-person who adopted the internal point of view of Dorian so the reader identify himself with the character. Dorian is the tipycal dandy who lived a life of pleasure who realised his dreams and his whishes and thought at the beauty like an important thing. The picture in the dark side of Dorian’s personality and rapresent the corrupted and the immorality of Victorian middle class while Dorian with his innocent appearance is the symbol of bourgeois hypocrisy. In the end when the picture re-became beuty th theory of Wilde that the art surviving people was confirmed.
Dorian is perfect sobject for the theme of reality and appearance. When his wish became truth he conserved the aspect of the innocent man instead he committed orrible crimes.
